Dear Friend,

“To the world you may be just one person but to just one person you may be the world”

Dear Friend,

“To the world you may be just one person but to just one person you may be the world”

I would like to welcome you to our new ezine.  Please read on to hear about some of the fantastic wishes that have been granted and the wonderful events that have taken place throughout the country over the past few months.

This year, the team in Make-A-Wish are working hard to ensure we grant 210 wishes. We cannot achieve this ambitious target without the support of all our friends. So to everyone who has helped us to date, a massive thank you. We still have a lot of work to do and need your continued support and generosity.

There are many ways for you to get involved with Make-A-Wish from organising an event in your local community, becoming a volunteer or indeed if you think your company would be interested in supporting Make-A-Wish, please get in touch with any of the team, we would be delighted to hear from you.

Remember, it is people like you who make these magical wishes come true.

Regards,

Dear Make-A-Wish

Thank you for sending me on my wish to go to a Waterpark.  I loved the waterpark as I got to go on lots of fun slides.

The slide at my holiday home was brilliant too and there was lots of splashing and playing in the pools.  I ate huge ice cream in the restaurant but my brother likes treats too so we both got to eat ice cream every day and watch movies at night after the shows.

We went on a big funny bike all along the beach and even on a pedal boat out in the sea.  We got toys to play with in the hotel and on the beach.  We got a special train to the beach and made sandcastles and played with our water pistols.

I got to dress up like a princess at night and we played on the bouncy castle, the climbing tower and the giant trampolines at our hotel.

I think mammy and daddy might have had a great time too.

Thank you so much

Ella

Wishmakers Needed

Become a Make-A-Wish Volunteer.

Can you venture into the imagination of a child?

Do you want to make the world just a little bit more magical?

Can you help raise the funds necessary to grant a wish to every eligible child in your county?

Our Challenge

Make-A-Wish needs your help...

  • ARE YOU GAME?
  • Can you see things through the eyes of a child?
  • Can you raise the funds to make these wishes come true?

What we need

We need committed and enthusiastic individuals to recruit, motivate and co-ordinate teams of fundraising volunteers in every county raising money to grant the wishes in their area.

We need wishgranting volunteers in every county of Ireland to visit our wish children and ascertain their one true wish.

"Make-A-Wish Ireland is a fantastic organisation and does wonderful work to enrich the lives of children living with a life-threatening medical condition. The impact of a wish is immense, it can empower a child and increase the emotional strength to enable the child to fight their illness. It creates a very special moment for both the child and the family, which is cherished by all."

Fantastic Fundraising

This year, several Make-A-Wish supporters have come up with really creative and fun ways to raise money for wishes. All of these great events started off as small ideas, and grew through the enthusiasm and dedication of the people involved. Take a look at the stories for each event, and you just might be inspired!

Celebrate Cian Weekend

Sometimes event
s take on a life of their own and the Celebrate Cian weekend in Aughnacliffe, Co. Longford was a great example of this.

Family and friends of Cian Smith, who had his wish to go to Disney Florida granted in 2010 organised a beautiful fun-filled weekend last March in his memory.

They held a Come Dine With Me event on the Friday in a local hotel which was so successful that they had to run it again on Saturday too!

Cian's friends took part in a football match on the Sunday, Cian was a keen sports player and fan, and it was fitting that both the Sam Maguire and the Liam McCarthy Cup were in his home town.

The whole community gathered together to celebrate Cian’s life over the weekend which ended with a touching finale of a bunch of Make-A-Wish balloons being released into the sky by his sister Áine.

Christine Collins got in touch about the event early in 2013, with the thought that it might raise about €3,000. However, the event just kept getting bigger and raised ten times that amount, with a cheque for €30,000 presented to Martina from Make-A-Wish in May.

Special thanks to the Smith Family and to Christine (who gave birth to twins just a few weeks later!) for making a difference to the children on our waiting list by using this lovely tribute to Cian to raise funds for Make-A-Wish.

Waterford Quiz Night

Brianna Connaughton and her sister Aideen, our lead volunteers for Waterford, hosted a table quiz in January for Make-A-Wish.

The sisters organised the event within a couple of weeks, and spread the word about it through family and friends - by text message, Facebook and through the local press and radio station.

21 teams of four people took part, at €10 a head, and we hear that competition was fierce on the night!

They spread the word about the night through family and friends, by text message, Facebook and through the local press and radio station.

Local businesses, like jewellers, hotels and restaurants, off-licences, bookshops and gyms all kindly donated prizes for the raffle and auction.

The night raised €1,166.10 for Make-A-Wish. We're very grateful to all involved for this.

Dunshaughlin Weight Loss Challenge

Make-A-Wish supporter Tony Flynn had an idea in 2012 which ended up raising more than €21,000 for Make-A-Wish!

Tony gathered together a group of friends who set themselves the task of losing weight and raising money for the charity at the same time.

The group split up into four teams - Blue, Green, Red & Yellow and the competition to see who could lose the most weight was on! They all kept track of their progress through regular weigh-in nights, and kept in touch to encourage each other with the challenge.

Over the next three months, the group held a variety of fundraising events, including a Cheltenham Preview Night, a Dog Agility Competition, a Pantomime and an auction of sports memorabilia. Tony also worked hard to secure sponsorship from local businesses, like Peak Fitness where the group pumped iron to help them shift the pounds, and Champagne Beauty where the ladies were pampered to help them get ready for the celebration night.

The group asked their families and friends to support them also, and raised a large portion of their sponsorship through the website MyCharity.ie

The finale night was held in Glow, in Dunshaughlin and the place was packed! There were huge cheers for all of the group, especially the winning Yellow team and the overall winner Mark O'Connor. Tony made a very heart-felt speech thanking everyone who had been involved which got a round of applause and brought tears to a few eyes.

Make-A-Wish is very grateful to Tony, all of the challengers and their supporters for the impact they have had on our work this year.

Thank you!

Making Wishes Come True

The impact of a wish on our volunteers!

Below is an email we recieved from one of our volunteers who facilitated a wish for Robert... I wish to have the Lego Deathstar....

Hi All,

What a fantastic wish for Robert.  Attached are the photos of The Storm Troopers which were amazing.  From the time he left his house on Monday he has been star struck with everything.  The Limo was a hummer which was fantastic and he was so excited, he did not even notice the Strom Troopers waiting on him at Dundrum !

Hamleys were so kind and even got the sisters nails painted - they had a treasure hunt and more fun with Hamleys' own bear.

Everyone involved in helping with this wish went over and above board to ensure he had a great time and the two days were truly magical for all the family.

I spoke with Terri, his Mum last night and she was so thankful to The Make-A-Wish Foundation for giving them such great memories of a truly magical day.

Thank you Cathy, Ailbhe & Anita for all your help with this wish.  The 'Feel good' feeling we felt on the day is absolutely second to none !!!!!

Thanks again,

Mary
